Hollow Knight is a metroidvania through and through. Environmental story telling was part of the experience, and I feel as though it would have worked if I KNEW ANYTHING ABOUT THESE PLACES! Hollow Knight tried being mysterious with its limited and environmental storytelling. There were characters here and there who were cool (Hornet, who is getting a whole spinoff, and Zora), but nothing outside of that. The bread trail left never tempted me to chase it, it just frustrated me and I didn’t end up caring at all about the story. It tried to be too much like a FromSoftware game in the sense that it attempted to breadcrumb you story bits here and there. I know that there was once a kingdom that ended up succumbing to some virus/infection. This is one of largest gripes with the game. Hollow Knight is a good game, but I don’t find it great. This is not the same review that you have probably seen from the major outlets giving the game rave reviews. I completed this game 5 years later, but there’s a caveat. That game is Hollow Knight by Team Cherry. It is debatable though that this game didn’t grow to its current stardom until it was ported over to the Nintendo Switch.
In 2017 a small indie game came out just when indie games were starting to get their time in the line limelight. I found that switching to the controller made the game much easier. I played the majority of my playthrough with the keyboard and while it wasn't horrible, the gameplay is definitely more optimized for a controller. As far as criticisms go, one thing I would say is not so great is playing this game with a keyboard. I never experienced any bugs or glitches, and I always felt I was in complete control of my movement and what I could do. Regardless, from the dope soundtrack, the beautiful and diverse environments, and even the super responsive player controller, this game was beyond excellent. I think I was stuck on one of the final bosses for a good 5 - 10 hours of gameplay - might be an underestimation. You really feel like you are a David against Goliath, and there are no punches held. Though I found that the bosses and platforming(at times) were very challenging, it all seems very reasonable and fitting for the thematic premise. Here's a quick summary of my opinion with no spoilers. If you want to face off against the secret final boss, however, you’ll instead need to use the Dream Nail on The Hollow Knight. If you’re looking for the most straightforward experience, approach each boss in the following order: However, we wouldn’t necessarily recommend straying too far off the beaten path as a new player, because the game has a natural learning curve and progression. Therefore, you can choose to engage the majority of bosses in whichever order you see fit.
Hollow Knight is a game that gives you a lot of freedom to explore most of the map at your own pace. Fortunately, if you follow these bosses in order, you’ll always know where to go next. And you’ll want to keep this little guide handy if you decide to give it a shot, because the game features a wide variety of bosses, and the order in which you should fight them is not always clear. If you haven’t had the chance to play the game yet, now is still as good a time as any to check it out. Hollow Knight is a fantastic metroidvania that remains popular despite its growing age.
